Hotel Togariishi is located at the foot of Mt. Nishi in the Yatsugatake range. People have inhabited this land of steep peaks blessed with nature since the Jomon period nearly 15,000 years ago.
Today the area is known for ruins associated with the first Jomon period village excavations conducted in Japan.
From the days of old the locals have referred to a triangular, pyramid shaped boulder resting outside the Togariishi Ruins as "Honorable Togariishi" and held it in great esteem. This boulder lends the ruins its names. Its man-made abrasions are said to be traces left by the people of Jomon when using it as a grinding stone to make chipped-stone axes.
