Hotel Togariishi is located at the foot of Mt. Nishi in the Yatsugatake range. People have inhabited this land of steep peaks blessed with nature since the Jomon period nearly 15,000 years ago.

Today the area is known for ruins associated with the first Jomon period village excavations conducted in Japan. From the days of old the locals have referred to a triangular, pyramid shaped boulder resting outside the Togariishi Ruins as "Honorable Togariishi" and held it in great esteem. This boulder lends the ruins its names. Its man-made abrasions are said to be traces left by the people of Jomon when using it as a grinding stone to make chipped-stone axes.

Lake Suwa

Suwa Grand Shrine (Kamisha)

This is the main headquarters of the Suwa Grand Shrine which has about 25,000 branch shrines around the country. Wooden pillars called "Onbashira" stand in the four corners around the shrine pavilion, which itself has a unique layout. Several the shrine buildings have been designated as "important cultural properties." Kamisha is known for the Onbashira Festival held once every 6 years.

The Togariishi Ruins are typical of the Jomon culture that flourished at the base of the Yatsugatake range 5000 years ago. This is a depository of archives that has been maintained by the Moriya family since the Kamakura period over 1300 years ago. The Jinchokan Moriya Shiryokan stores the various documents and offers them for public display.
